speak when the sky is blackYou move first a considered pause pressing on your lips verbs skip across spaces adjectives shuffle between black and white There are 47 seconds between check and check mate and 18 ways to be still but these tessellated gaps we move between are waiting for bishops and kings and queens to canter and forget to count the squaresspeak when the sky is black

space I throw words that stumble across to reach you
words that
unravel thoughtlessly and
split like rope between us
a small ode to my journaljournal sentinel of my thoughts that run across your papery skina small ode to my journal
they come to you and hide in tea stained pages that smell of jasmine and whisper as I tattoo words with a soft pencil
but mostly, they listen
and stare at me
as blankness is tickled with a memory.

leaving the light on in spite of despising it the almost never silent the blood and the body
hope is a half-truth hope lies in hiding it
the days rest their weight in the lines of your face imperfect permanence they age and they ache
skin's a scribbled-on postcard sincere and unsent
and a memory's forever where you left it
